What Will a New Geyser Cost?
Burst geyser or planning ahead — pick your household size and geyser type, and get a realistic all-in price for a compliant replacement: the unit, safety accessories, labour, and both the Plumbing and Electrical COCs.
How this calculator works
The prices come straight from our geyser replacement cost guide — realistic 2026 all-in ranges for the Western Cape that include the geyser unit, standard compliance accessories, labour, and both certificates. The calculator does two things:
- Sizes the geyser to your household — using the standard guideline of 50 litres per person per day. A household of 4 needs 150–200 litres; if you consistently run out of hot water, the answer is a bigger tank, not a hotter thermostat.
- Prices the type you choose — standard electric (lowest upfront), heat pump (60–75% less electricity, pays back in 3–5 years), or solar (lowest running cost, needs the right roof).
Standard electric geyser — replacement cost (2026)
| Geyser size | Suitable for | All-in cost |
| 80 litre | 1–2 people / small apartment | R6,500 – R9,500 |
| 100 litre | 2–3 people | R7,500 – R11,000 |
| 150 litre | 3–4 people (most common) | R8,500 – R13,000 |
| 200 litre | 4–6 people / large home | R10,000 – R16,000 |
Heat pump geyser — installed cost
A heat pump works like a reverse air conditioner — it extracts heat from the air, using 60–75% less electricity than a standard geyser for the same hot water. It costs 2–3× more upfront and typically pays back the premium within 3–5 years:
| System size | Suitable for | All-in cost |
| 150 litre | 2–4 people | R22,000 – R32,000 |
| 200 litre | 4–6 people | R26,000 – R40,000 |
| 300 litre | Large household / high demand | R35,000 – R55,000 |
Solar geyser — installed cost
| System | Suitable for | All-in cost |
| 150 litre flat panel | 2–3 people | R18,000 – R28,000 |
| 200 litre flat panel | 3–5 people | R22,000 – R35,000 |
| 200 litre evacuated tube | 3–5 people (higher efficiency) | R28,000 – R45,000 |

Ask about rebates before you signEskom and some municipalities periodically offer rebates on heat pump and solar installations — they can meaningfully reduce the upfront cost of an energy-efficient upgrade. Your installer will know the current programmes.
Repair or replace?
Replace if the geyser is over 10 years old, the tank is leaking or burst, the hot water runs rust-coloured, a repair would cost more than half a new unit, or the same element has failed more than twice in two years. Repair if it's under 8 years old with a sound tank and the fault is an element, thermostat or valve — those are inexpensive fixes that restore normal function. When the plumber assesses it, ask them to inspect the sacrificial anode rod — its condition tells you a lot about the tank's remaining life.
⚠️
If a quote doesn't mention both COCs, askA compliant replacement needs a Plumbing COC from the plumber and an Electrical COC from the electrician. Some quotes exclude compliance work to look cheaper — but without both certificates the installation is non-compliant, your insurance may be invalidated, and you'll face issues when selling. Our
Plumbing COC guide and
Electrical COC guide explain what each covers.
Example estimates
Like-for-like: 150 L electric for a family of four
The most common South African replacement: R8,500 – R13,000 all-in, and about 2–4 hours without hot water while the plumber-and-electrician team swaps it.
Upgrade: from a 100 L to a 200 L electric
Consistently running out of hot water in a growing household: R10,000 – R16,000 — but note that stepping up sizes can also mean upgraded pipe connections and a higher-amperage circuit, which is exactly the kind of line item an itemised quote should show.
Switch: 200 L heat pump instead of another electric
R26,000 – R40,000 installed — roughly R16,000–R24,000 more than the equivalent electric geyser, paid back within 3–5 years through a 60–75% smaller hot-water electricity bill, faster if a rebate applies.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a geyser in South Africa?
A standard electric geyser replacement costs R6,500–R16,000 all-in for 2026 depending on size: R6,500–R9,500 for 80 litres, R8,500–R13,000 for the most common 150 litre, and R10,000–R16,000 for 200 litres. That includes the unit, drip tray, safety valves, labour, and both the Plumbing and Electrical COCs.
What size geyser do I need?
50 litres per person per day is the standard guideline. A household of 2 needs 80–100 litres; a household of 4 needs 150–200 litres; 5 or more people need 200–250 litres or a dual-geyser system. If you consistently run out of hot water, size up rather than matching the old unit.
How much does a heat pump geyser cost installed?
R22,000–R32,000 installed for a 150 litre heat pump, R26,000–R40,000 for 200 litres, and R35,000–R55,000 for 300 litres in 2026. Heat pumps use 60–75% less electricity than a standard geyser and typically pay back the price premium within 3–5 years. Ask about current Eskom or municipal rebates.
How much does a solar geyser cost installed?
R18,000–R28,000 for a 150 litre flat panel system, R22,000–R35,000 for 200 litres, and R28,000–R45,000 for a 200 litre evacuated tube system in 2026. Solar needs north-facing roof space and a backup element for overcast periods — common in Western Cape winters.
Does geyser replacement need both a plumber and an electrician?
Yes. The plumber handles water connections, drip tray, overflow piping and issues the Plumbing COC; the electrician handles wiring, the isolator, earthing and issues the Electrical COC. Both certificates are legally required — without them your insurance may be invalidated and you will face issues when selling. DIY replacement is not legal or safe.
Should I repair or replace my geyser?
Replace if the geyser is over 10 years old, the tank is leaking or burst, the hot water runs rust-coloured, or a repair would cost more than half a new unit. Repair if it's under 8 years old with a sound tank and the fault is an element, thermostat or valve — those are inexpensive fixes.
Will my home insurance pay for a burst geyser?
Most policies cover sudden failure (a burst geyser) but not gradual wear and tear. Notify your insurer before authorising work, photograph the damage first, and don't dispose of the old unit until they confirm. Check your excess — commonly R2,000–R5,000 — against the replacement cost before claiming.
How long does geyser replacement take?
A like-for-like electric replacement takes 2–4 hours for an experienced plumber and electrician team — plan to be home for roof space and DB board access. Heat pump and solar installations are bigger jobs; confirm the timeline on the quote.
