What Hollow Sounding Tiles Indicate
A hollow sound when tapping tiles indicates voids beneath the tile where adhesive has failed or was never applied properly. This happens from insufficient adhesive applied during installation leaving gaps, wrong trowel technique creating air pockets, tiles installed over dusty or contaminated surfaces preventing bonding, substrate movement breaking adhesive bond after installation, or moisture beneath tiles causing adhesive to fail. Hollow tiles are not an immediate emergency but they are a warning sign. Without solid adhesive contact, tiles cannot support loads properly and will eventually crack from the stress.
The Risk of Ignoring Hollow Tiles
Hollow tiles progressively worsen. The unsupported tile flexes slightly when weight is applied creating stress. Eventually the tile cracks, usually starting from edges or corners. Cracked tiles can shatter suddenly under foot traffic creating sharp hazardous edges and requiring expensive replacement. In wet areas, water gets into voids beneath hollow tiles causing adhesive failure to spread to adjacent tiles, mould growth in hidden voids, and substrate damage. The problem spreads progressively - adjacent tiles debond as movement transfers stress. Early repair of hollow tiles is far cheaper than dealing with widespread failure and broken tiles.
Our Hollow Tile Repair Approach
Our Gordon's Bay tiling team tap test the entire tiled area to identify all affected tiles using a systematic pattern, mark all hollow-sounding tiles for removal, carefully remove hollow tiles to minimize damage and potentially reuse them, inspect substrate beneath for damage, moisture, or contamination, repair and prepare substrate properly ensuring it is clean, dry, and level, apply correct adhesive using proper technique with appropriate trowel for full coverage, reinstall tiles ensuring they are fully bedded with no voids, check surrounding tiles and address any showing early signs of failure, grout properly, and provide guidance on preventing future issues. We guarantee our repair work with proper adhesive coverage.
Preventing Hollow Tile Installation
Avoid hollow tiles by ensuring proper installation initially with qualified experienced tilers, using correct adhesive for tile size and location, applying adhesive with correct trowel technique, back-buttering large format tiles for guaranteed coverage, properly preparing and priming substrates before tiling, and allowing proper curing before grouting and traffic. We conduct tap testing during installation to ensure solid bonding before grouting. Quality tile installation should have zero hollow-sounding tiles. All tiles should sound solid when tapped indicating full adhesive contact and proper bonding to substrate.
