This happens from insufficient adhesive applied during installation leaving gaps, wrong trowel technique creating air pockets, tiles installed over dusty or contaminated surfaces preventing bonding, substrate movement breaking adhesive bond after installation, or moisture beneath tiles causing adhesive to fail. Avoid hollow tiles by ensuring proper installation initially with qualified experienced tilers, using correct adhesive for tile size and location, applying adhesive with correct trowel technique, back-buttering large format tiles for guaranteed coverage, properly preparing and priming substrates before tiling, and allowing proper curing before grouting and traffic. We conduct tap testing during installation to ensure solid bonding before grouting. Quality tile installation should have zero hollow-sounding tiles.
